Hi! I'm Anckia

Here's a little more about me...

USER EXPERIENCE DESIGNER, WOMAN IN TECH AND PROUD DOG MUM

I started my professional career as a biologist. In my culture, a lot of value is placed on science, but the arts are usually neglected, thus I never really had the opportunity to nurture my creative side. Although my background in biology has instilled a deep set curiosity in me, regarding how things work, it didn’t give me a lot of room to be creative. My path seemed inevitable and I felt stuck.

However, after finding myself in Silicon Valley, and discovering User Experience design, I felt excited about something again. It’s the perfect marriage between my analytical left brain and my creative side. I finally found something that got my nose out of my books and experiencing life again. It enables me to answer the “why” of everyday things, while still being able to create experiences and interact with people.

I found that my experiences with living on three different continents and having to constantly adapt to new cultures and environments made me very empathetic towards people and the frustration and anxiety they feel when dealing with change, be it digital or physical. My ability to empathize with people from different walks of life gives me the ability to look at a problem from their point of view and my research background forces me to dig until I find the solution. In this case, my tendency to overthink everything actually benefits me in this field.

In my private life, you would either find me getting lost in some random little town, with my nose buried in an ever so slightly trashy romance novel, geeking out with the hubby on the sofa watching Doctor Who, or screaming Foo Fighter lyrics back at them till my throat is raw.

I speak too much, laugh too loudly and can’t seem to refrain from using terrible baby speak with my 100 lbs dog baby, but I love every second of it.
